We just watched The Illusionist which I never got around to in the cinema, partly because it was delayed so as not to clash with The Prestige and partly because I thought I guessed from the reviews what the plot was. And I did, sort of, except that I considerably underestimated its ingenuity and the extent to which magic is, in the end, a technology of will, and stage magic a technology of finding out what other people's will is and how they can be persuaded to cooperate with you. It is a smart and telling film from which we were only slightly distracted by the presence of Max from Eastenders.

Which brings me rather neatly to a possible meme that I discussed the other day with paratti. If the writers' strike goes on and actors find themselves out of work because shows get cancelled by studious using the force majeure clause to blackmail everyone, some of those actors could presumably come and work here, a bit.

So, which actors/characters from which shows would you like to see turning up in which UK shows as what? I draw people's attention to the early appearances of Kiera Knightly in The Bill - we have some entertaining stinkers here.

Talking of which, why didn't anyone tell me about David Tennant playing a transwoman in The Rab C. Nesbit Show. Much prettier than David Duchovny as Denise...
