And the nicest thing that happened to me today is
I got a photo of me and Kate Bornstein - I am the tubby one on the right, for those who don't know me.
Kate, if anyone does not know, is the guru of neo-trans radicalism, the queen of autobiographical performance and one of the sharpest and nicest people I know. Anyone who has not read 'Gender Outlaw' needs to and her new book on avoiding suicide Hello Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks and Other Outlaws
is one of the smartest self-help books ever written.
Kate was one of the best things in a great weekend, at Transfabulous. I am so proud to have been her friend for some sixteen years.
When I first went to San Francisco, various of my New York friends said 'you have to meet Kate Bornstein'. When I got to SF, and had lunch with Kathy Acker, Kathy said 'you have to meet Kate Bornstein.' We were riding in on a bus from looking at pelicans and got talking to a nice clone who suddenly looked at me seriously and said 'you really ought to meet Kate Bornstein'. Sometimes people don't live up to that kind of billing...Not this time.
