Gossip Girl Rocks!
'I would rather give my kids up for adoption than end up like you. Oh wait, you did that.'
One of the things that stops this show being just froth is its sense of how family and class create patterns that persist across generations and are endlessly reflexive. This is why it does the whole thing of linking with literary handlings of the class it represents much of the time; this is also why it is right that it have a prequel dealing with Lily's teens in the LA of the 80s. Last night's episode was as much a preview for that as a calm before the storm of Georgina's reckoning with Poppy next week, and I am totally signed up for the new show as well as this one.
I loved that Lily's father was played by Andrew McCarthy, btw; along with Winona playing Spock's mother, this is further evidence that the original generation of High School Movie stars are becoming an older generation. Teen Dreams
is a historical document, in some ways.
