I'm reading some of his sonnets...

at a Shakespeare concert quite soon,and am thinking about him quite a lot.


I'm pretty certain that you were the man
from Stratford, and that you had no idea
you were the greatest poet. It is clear
from what your friends said that you had no plan

no moral system. You just wrote a play
so you and friends could act it, thought this speech
or that was pretty good, tried to give each
person on stage the odd good line to say

so no-one felt left out. You weren't the star
acted in bit parts mostly. Played the Ghost
in Hamlet, That was probably the most
important part you played. Great artists are

often too busy getting their work done
to think themselves better than anyone.
