I got asked to speak at the Malawi demo tomorrow

and I thought it would be nice to do a poem for Steven and Tiwonge as well as speak for them from a trans perspective.

The Court of Love

Paired lovers names - Tiwonge Steven- can
tell us of glances, touches, quiet meals.
Love's catalogue. And what the angry man
who judged them does not know is how it feels

to be in love and young, and feel so right.
Tiwonge in her headscarf and red blouse
and holding hands with Steven, holding tight
until one day the police came to their house.

Dragged them apart away. What kind of threat
can lovers be? Their kisses and their tears
Stronger than law. Harsh judges may forget
that love away, apart, is worn by years

yet lasts, but those who punish love will learn
love's bittersweet stern verdict in their turn.
