The law's a tune that changes as we dance
We try so hard to keep fast-moving feet
untangled, to keep moving in a street
as the law moves us on. We have no chance
of pleasing law. It's a kaleidoscope -
sharp shifting patterns flash before our eyes.
We think we keep the peace. It's peace that lies
and breaks its promise, broken without hope.
We dreamed of fairness. Those that said the law
was just a trick were right. The rich will burn
our freedoms and our safeties. They return
their grins all teeth set in a cruel jaw
that bites and holds and kills. The crocodile
seemed dead, but only rested for a while
