Moral idiocy lives

Thanks, I fear, to Andrew Sullivan, I found this unutterably daft news story

http://www.kansas.com/mld/kansas/news/editorial/12007660.htm

We are now being told that the BTK killer would have been even worse had he not been a church-goer, and that churchgoing enabled him to give up serial killing for a while. Further, that perhaps the reason so many serial killers never get caught is that they start going to church, and repent their sins.

It is at times like this that I am glad that, though I am an atheist, I am definitely a Roman Catholic atheist, who believes that repentance without confession is probably worthless. If you have had the habit of killing random strangers, it is really not enough to decide it was wrong, and stop. You actually have to turn yourself in.

The whole point of the row about indulgences that triggered the Reformation was that Luther argued there should be no get-out-of-jail free card and he pretty much won that argument. But, of course, if you get yourself born again, lying to the military authorities about your drug addiction or running down your ex-boyfriend, to mention two sins less extreme than serial murder which might happen to anyone named Bush, are bits of your unregenerate past which can be forgotten about.

I also find it deeply disturbing that someone can get to be an authority on serial killers while arguing something so clearly insane. Or does that make me a persecutor of Christians?
